STRANGE AGENDA: CONFUSED PASTORS, BEWITCHED MEMBERS

"Israel has forgotten his Maker and gotten busy making palaces" (Hosea 8:14, The Message).

The church today has indeed forgotten her Lord and also forgotten her mandate. It is no wonder that the church is building everything except the lives it was instituted to build. Rather than building the souls of men, helping people to have a meaningful walk with God on this earth, and preparing them for eternity, most of today's pastors want to first build a personal lifestyle of affluence and unnecessary sophistication typified by trendy suits, exotic automobiles, and expensive but needless overseas trips to impress their imaginary onlookers.

Their members then take a cue from them so that coming to church is no longer for any spiritual purpose but another session of the fashion parade show. The pastors talk to them more about how to make it and succeed in this life, not how to please God - and the people love it so. They are very excited when the pastor talks to them about their ego, but very uninterested when God is the subject matter. Is it not a classic irony of our time that if you talk too much about God in the house of God, the 'people of God' will get angry and leave?

And then, it seems that our next priority in this generation is to build the physical temple and ignore the spiritual one. While it is important that we have proper and decent meeting houses, we must be careful not to repeat the error of Solomon who built the physical temple but ignored the spiritual development of Israel. The result was that the sins of the people he did not built led to the destruction of the temple that he built.

After trying to outdo one another in the building of gigantic church structures, auditoria and massive prayer camps, the next line of competition for today's pastors is in bulding of educational institutions, businesses, housing estates and what have you. All these are good, but it is very sad that we are allowing the good to stop us from doing what is right.

We must start addressing these issues now before the trouble that is staring us in the face breaks in on us. The abominable perversions we see daily in today's world shows that the society is already suffering from the Church's loss of focus. We have just a little time before the judgment of God comes upon the house of God. It is time to repent.
