THE PAIN OF A GOOD MAN

"A good man leaveth an inheritance to his children's children: and the wealth of the sinner is laid up for the just" (Proverbs 13:22).

We often hear about generational or foundational curses that need to be broken, but we hardly hear about generational blessings that has to be inherited. However, it is right to suppose that if there is something called generational curses, there must also be something called generational blessings. If there are foundational curses, there must be foundational blessings as well. Ishmael, Isaac, Esau, and Jacob were all beneficiaries of generational blessings.
It is okay to raise a prayer point to destroy every generational or foundational curse in my life. But I think it is also okay for me to pray into my life whatever is positive in my foundation, and whatever blessing flowed in my forebearers. For God could not have been so wicked as not to put anything good in my ancestry. And if, perhaps, you did not meet a foundation of blessings in your lineage, you can lay one. You can be the precursor of generational blessings for those who would follow after you.

Laying the foundation of the blessings of God and becoming the precursor of generational blessings for your descendants is something I want you to desire and work towards. Abraham was the precursor of the blessings of God for his descendants. David the son of Jesse was also the harbinger of God's blessings for his descendants. We may not hear so much good or positive things about Abraham or David's forebearers. But from the time of these individuals, the blessings of God became a constant subject with all the families that flowed from them. For thousands of generations after their death, the descendants of Abraham and David continued to make proud references to their progenitors as the source of God's blessings upon them. Friends, you can become the Abraham of your lineage. You can be the David of your generation. You can live in such a way that when you are gone, God would keep blessing your children and your children's children, just because of you.

In order to bring this to pass, there are a number of things you must do. I want to touch on two of these things. The first is to purpose to walk with God. Abraham and David were great covenant friends of God. They walked with Him and had very dynamic relationships with Him. They were always willing to do God's bidding even when it was difficult. They were always willing to put their trust in Him. They loved God with everything they had and kept back nothing from Him. Can you imagine Abraham, for example, attempting to sacrifice his covenant son to God? And look at David who gave all he had for the building of the temple of God. These men left a legacy of walking with God and they became reference points for generations after them. How well you walk with God will tell how long your descendants will enjoy His blessings.

The other thing you must do is to teach your children the way of the covenant you struck with the Lord. Abraham was able to pass down God's blessing upon him to his children, not just by leaving behind material wealth, but by instilling in them the knowledge of God. In fact, God testified of Abraham that he was sure to "command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the LORD, to do justice and judgment" (Genesis 18:19). And so, a man like Jacob would always invoke upon himself the blessings of Abraham and Isaac his father. David also displayed this attribute, particularly when he admonished his son Solomon as he handed over the reigns of government to him. He told the young king, "Solomon my son, know thou the God of thy father, and serve him with a perfect heart and with a willing mind: for the LORD searcheth all hearts, and understandeth all the imaginations of the thoughts: if thou seek him, he will be found of thee; but if thou forsake him, he will cast thee off for ever" (1 Chronicles 28:9).

Please don't leave behind battles for your children to fight. Rather, leave for them blessings to inherit. Please don't leave behind curses to be broken. Rather, let your descendants keep finding treasure boxes that they must keep breaking. I am taking my walk with God very seriously to leave an example for my children. I am determined to leave positive inheritance for those who would follow after me. I have purposed that my children for many generations to come must keep thanking God that they came through my loins. What about you?
