EVERYTHING ABOUT HIM IS GREAT

"For the LORD your God is God of gods, and Lord of lords, a great God, a mighty, and a terrible, which regardeth not persons, nor taketh reward" (Deuteronomy 10:17).

A songwriter wrote recently, saying, everything written about God is great. Very true. Indeed, everything we read, hear and know about Him is great. It cannot be otherwise because we are talking about the almighty God whose name is great and whose power is awesomely great. He is called the God of gods and the Lord of lords because He is greater than all gods and lords. Everything about Him can only be in the positive superlatives.

Our God is in a class of His own. There is none like Him, neither is there any God beside Him. All the other so-called gods are mere idols, the creation or works of mortal man. That is why the Lord God is to be feared above all gods. Also, everything God does is  great. Whether you are talking about magnitude or magnificence, greatness is the signature you find on all the works of God. He is great in counsel and mighty in deeds. He is called the great and mighty God because of His omnipotency by which He accomplishes great wonders.

The greatness of the Lord God is incontestable. Even His enemies, the adversaries of the children of Israel called Him great. In a protest to King Darius during the time of Ezra the priest, one of such adversaries wrote, "Be it known unto the king, that we went into the province of Judea, to the house of the great God, which is builded with great stones, and timber is laid in the walls, and this work goeth fast on, and prospereth in their hands" (Ezra 5:8).

If we are going to have a successful walk with God, we must relate to Him in everything with full awareness of His greatness. For example, the Psalmist says that when it comes to praising the Lord, He must be "greatly" praised (Psalms 48:1). Also, "God is greatly to be feared" (Psalms 89:7). Nehemiah taught that nothing short of a great offering is due to our great God (Nehemiah 12:43). Solomon said he had to build a "great" house for God because He is great above all gods (2 Chronicles 2:5).

The one that terrifies me most is that there is really no small sin against a great God. Abimelech, the Philistine king in Gerar said taking another man's wife, even in innocence, would have "brought on me and my kingdom a great sin" (Genesis 20:9). Joseph said to fall for Mrs Potiphar's seduction is to do "great wickedness, and sin against God" (Genesis 39:9). Moses told the children of Israel that in making the golden calf, they had "sinned a great sin" (Exodus 32:30). Concerning the unethical priestly behaviours of the sons of Eli, the Bible says, "the sin of the young men was very great before the Lord" (1 Samuel 2:17). David said that in counting the children of Israel, he had "done very foolishly" and "sinned greatly" against God (1 Chronicles 21:8). It is, indeed a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God!

The words of Moses are fitting conclusions here. He said, "you must acknowledge the greatness of our God. As for the Rock, his work is perfect, for all his ways are just. He is a reliable God who is never unjust, he is fair and upright" (Deuteronomy 32:3-4).
