And when the Philistine looked about, and saw David, he disdained him: for he was but a youth, and ruddy, and of a fair countenance" (1 Samuel 17:42).
The
Goliath story teaches a lot of lessons and one could write a whole
volume on it. An important dimension to the story which must not be
overlooked is that things are not always as they seem. Appearance, they
say, could be deceptive. There could be more on the inside than what is
displayed on the outside. Unfortunately, Goliath learnt this vital life
lesson when he already had one foot on the descending slope of the world
beyond.
Here was Goliath, coming forward,
boasting to be the tallest, biggest and the most powerful person around.
He and his countrymen believed that he had everything in the
superlative. Then comes this little stripling of a boy called David who
in the eyes of everybody had nothing. It is this story that makes me to
understand that what you call 'nothing' can destroy what you call
'something'. If you have 'something' (whatever that may mean), be
careful with a man who has 'nothing'. If you take him for granted, you
could be doing so at your own peril.
Related
to the above is that you should never underestimate the power of little
things. If you know termites, you should understand what I mean. As
small as they are, they can bring down a whole building. Just one small
strand of hair from your eyelash can cause you immeasurable discomfort
if it got into your eye. David was small, very small, compared to
Goliath. You wouldn't blame a fully grown man of about three meters in
height for not seeing a little boy half his height as posing a deadly
threat. But Goliath simply didn't know the power of little things.
Again, unfortunately, Goliath was already on the freeway to the great
beyond when he learnt that lesson. Too, too late.
The
third lesson I want you to take from here is that if you are not 100%
sure that the almighty God is on your side, stop challenging people you
don't know all about them to a battle. Goliath apparently thought that
Israel had no giant like him, for if they did, such a man would have
been known, even beyond the shores of Israel. Well, Israel had no giant
but she had a David in whom the One who created the giant solidly dwelt.
My friend, fight if you will, but be careful, just in case the Israel
you have challenged to battle has a David in whom God solidly dwelt.
And, of course, if you have God dwelling in you, I pity whoever dares to
challenge you to a fight. That fellow is a goner after the order of
Goliath! It's only a matter of time.
