THE MOVING SPIRIT SERIES

And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters" (Genesis 1:2).

From the very opening verses of the Bible, we are introduced to what theologians refer to as the Godhead. God is a triune being, clearly manifesting the person of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. The doctrine of the trinity is one of the great mysteries of the Christian faith (1 Timothy 3:16). The manifestation of the trinity is consistent in both testaments of the Bible. Today, our focus is on the Holy Spirit and we want to draw attention to one of His important attributes.

Today's Scripture verse is the first reference to the Holy Spirit in the Bible. This first reference in the first chapter of the first book in the Bible tells us something very important about the Spirit of God - THE HOLY SPIRIT IS A MOVING SPIRIT. "And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters". The Spirit of God was the first mover: He moved upon the face of the waters.

Wherever the Spirit of God is, there is a movement in the direction of the will of God and the establishment of God's divine order. The earth, we are told, was out of order, without form and void of the perfect desires of God. Then the Spirit of God came in and had the effect of moving the earth into God's divine order for it.

The first work of the Spirit is to bring or restore order where it is absent. Where you find disorderliness and confusion, be sure that the Spirit of God had long taken His exit, for "God is not the author of confusion" (1 Corinthians 14:33). If anyone acts in a disorderly manner, and he tells you that he was being led to behave that way, know that he must have been led by 'another spirit' and not the Holy Spirit of God.

If the Spirit of God is truly in you, He would move you in the direction of God's program for your life. A very useful prayer that should be constant on your lips is asking the Holy Spirit to move you in the direction of God's will for your life. When you pray thus, there will be light for you and you will not walk aimlessly through life. And this applies to every area of life, from marriage to business, career, relationships, ministry, politics, etcetera.

But in closing, we must emphasize that the Spirit of God will never move us to sin against God or bring His name to dishonour. The Spirit of God will not move us against the word of God, the eternal truths set forth by the Holy Spirit Himself (2 Timothy 3:16-17; 2 Peter 1:21). The Spirit of God will always move us towards righteousness. Remember He is 'Holy' Spirit.
