What IS YOUR MESSAGE?

Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ?" (John 4:29).

Every true Christian has a message. You were saved to be a messenger of God. Everyone who has truly encountered Jesus must have a message. If there was a contact, there will be a message. And we are not necessarily talking about miracles, signs and wonders here because the essence of Jesus Christ is more than miracles and wonders. Yes, He is Himself 'Wonder', for His name shall be called 'Wonderful' (Isaiah 9:6). But as that Scripture in Isaiah also shows us, Jesus is far much more than wonders. The story of the woman of Samaria confirms this because she was yet to receive any obvious miracle from Jesus. But miracle or no miracle, she had encountered Jesus and she had a message for others.

Friends, if you don't have a message, if you have nothing to say about Jesus to your friends, family and neighbours, you probably have not had an encounter yet. Andrew encountered Jesus and the first thing he did was to find his own brother Peter. Similarly, Philip encountered Jesus and he went looking for his friend, Nathaniel. Philip, Andrew and the woman of Samaria were yet to receive any miracle or particular blessing from Jesus. They had not attended any Bible study or discipleship class. But they have had a contact with Jesus and that was enough to make them His messengers. You know what? These people just destroyed all our excuses for not sharing the message about Jesus with others.

The story of the woman of Samaria teaches further that you only need to say what you know. No one is asking you to tell others what you don't know. You are not required to formulate ideas and messages. You are only obliged to say what you know. What you know may not be much; just say it with a sincere mind. God knows how to use the little you say to accomplish much for His own purpose. This woman's message was short and simple: "Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ?"  That was enough to draw out the entire city to come unto Jesus.

Finally, please remember that though you speak, it is God who converts. None of us have the power to convert anybody. It is the Spirit of God that convicts and converts people. In sharing the message of Christ, our primary task is to give God raw materials with which He works on the heart of those who have heard our words. When Peter spoke on the Day of Pentecost, God used his words to prick the hearts of his hearers, conviction followed, and conversion took place. The words of the woman of Samaria neither convicted nor converted the people. But her words brought them to Jesus, and at the end of the day, the people told the woman, "Now we believe, not because of thy saying: for we have heard him ourselves, and know that this is indeed the Christ, the Saviour of the world" (John 4:42).

The salvation of the entire city of Samaria began with the testimony of this unnamed woman because she was willing to say the little she knew. What if she had refused to speak? I shudder at the implication and eternal consequences of such negligence. I tremble at the thought of the blood of multitudes being on the neck of just one person. O that believers would know how many eternal destinies are hanging upon our testimonies. O Lord our God, help us that we may not fail you.
