Love
is at the very heart of Christianity. Our faith came into being because
God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son to die for
the sins of the world. Love is the very basis or foundation of our
faith, and love is the end of it. But it is not just about love between
God and man and vice versa; there is also the important dimension of
love among men. We are commanded to love one another. Jesus demonstrated
to us how we should love each other. Love is the law of Christ. That is
the lesson being addressed in our Scripture verse for today.
God
knew that for reasons of physical or mental infirmity, run of ill luck,
or some other unplanned disabilities, some among us may not be able to
fulfill their obligations and meet their basic needs. God expects that
within the limits of scriptural provisions ethical considerations and
the laws of the land, it is your duty as a Christian to help those you
can. This is also subject to your personal capacity, resources and
means. The love of God that is supposed to fill the heart of the
Christian requires that you do so. It is called bearing one another's
burdens.
Helping out with the burdens of
others is not supposed to be dependent on their earning it. It is not
meant to be a reward for past acts of kindness. The word of God is
enough a reason to bear the burdens of others. The story of the good
Samaritan is one of the finest illustration of our subject matter. Here
was a man who reached out to help someone who could not help himself.
The good Samaritan didn't know the injured man from Adam. Neither would
the man be ever able to return the favour done to him. The good
Samaritan only acted out of godly compassion. Such manner of life is
well pleasing to God.
But the idea is not for
anyone to leave his responsibilities unattended to simply because he is
surrounded by brethren who are ever willing to give a helping hand. The
Bible didn't give us this admonition because of the lazy and
irresponsible folks in our midst. God expects everyone to diligently
take care of his obligations, to his personal self, his family and
community. That is why a few verses down the line, the Bible further
says, "For every man shall bear his own burden" (Galatians 6:5).
